U-boat Type VIID - AFV 1:350

Hello everybody!

My latest construction is quite far from what I usually do. It has to do with a German U-boat type VIID, the U-213 to be precise. Because of a tight schedule and not being involved with the hobby for quite sometime , I wanted something small , easy and quick to finish, so as  to catch up with things again and  wake up  from the lethargic modeling sleep that I had fallen into.

 The kit
It is the AFV (SE73505) kit in a 1/350 scale. It consists of 3 plastic sprues, 56 parts in total, including the display stand of the finished model. It also contains a framework of ten photo etched parts (which we can choose instead of the plastic ones for rails, masts etc.) and a small decal sheet. The instruction sheet  is detailed and explanatory and the construction is concluded in 6 steps, providing in the end clear painting instructions for three type VIID subs and more specifically the U-213, U-216 and U-218.

The kit makes a good impression already from the sprues. Few parts, but of high quality plastic with no flash at all. No filler required during assembly. In fact,  construction of the model took no more than one evening. I spent more time on the photo etched pieces which demand a somewhat more delicate handling, due to small scale and because of their flexibility. But it is all worth it and they should be preferred over the plastic ones, which are a bit off scale and leave a not –so-close-to –real impression.

I used Mr. Color products for painting . To be more specific: for the hull’s dunkelbrau up to the waterline I used C-40, for the blaugrau of the upper surfaces C-335 and for schiffsbodenfarbe III grau of the deck C-331. In addition, highlights and shadows of basic colors were done and also weathering with various AK Wash sets took place, to simulate the rust and the salt corrosion.

The finished model, is about  20cm in length. It is a very good kit, relatively cheap if you consider its quality. It is a must for anyone who is into small scale boat models but also for anyone who would like to spend a fun modelling weekend.
